Coffee and More open for business in Spicer
Catering and bread pudding are highlights of the new offerings at Diane Harm’s shop, Coffee & More on Spicer’s south side.  Diane’s baked goods and panini sandwiches are the greatest in-store hits. People are ordering the homemade bread pudding in the restaurant to eat on-site and by the cake pan to take home for their special occasions.  Catering is the “cream of the crop,” says Diane, taking her across the region to deliver in Spicer and to businesses and events throughout the county.

Bonding bill includes funding for Highway 23 project
WILLMAR — Looks like the Highway 23 four-lane project between New London and Interstate 94 may get funded after all. As part of the bonding bill that was finalized this weekend, the Legislature added $400 million to the state’s Corridors of Commerce program and put the state Highway 23 project on this list to be completed, said Rep. Dean Urdahl, R-Grove City.   Highway 23 was one of three highway projects selected to receive the new money, along with highways 14 and 252. “Highway

Tribune Editorial: Time to fund the gaps on Highway 23
The fishing agreement of Green Lake—for funding support for the Highway 23 gap projects—lasted apparently about as long as it took for the Minnesota political leaders to get out of Kandiyohi County Saturday. Willmar Lakes Area Governor’s Fishing Opener Host Kelly Morrell won an informal pledge Saturday from Gov. Mark Dayton, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, R-Nisswa, and House Speaker Kurt Daudt, R-Crown, for funding for completing the 7-mile and 9-miles two-lane gaps on state Highway

Spicer Castle to close: Family of John Spicer has owned lake cottage for 123 years
SPICER—A historic Spicer community landmark that operates as a restaurant and bed and breakfast on the southeast shore of Green Lake is closing and is for sale. The change could bring an end to the 123-year ownership of the Spicer Castle by the family of the man who built the structure and helped found the town that bears his name. “This is the last season the Spicer Castle will be open,” said Mary Latham, a fourth-generation member of the John M. Spicer family who has owned the classic

Governor’s Fishing Opener; Governor lands bass but not a walleye
SPICER — Governor Mark Dayton led his boatmates by catching three of the eight largemouth bass they landed and released on the fishing opener on Green Lake in Spicer on Saturday morning, but there was not a walleye to be had. Their guide never wetted a line, but came back with the biggest prize, if it can be counted as a keeper when the legislature goes back to work Monday. Willmar Lakes Area Host Kelly Morrell won an informal pledge of support from the governor and his boatmates to fund the

Willmar Lakes Area expects economic boost from Governor’s Fishing Opener
WILLMAR — The Willmar Lakes Area is hoping to not only catch some big fish during the 2018 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener but also a big positive impact on the region, both in terms of dollars and in publicity. “Historically, the fishing opener weekend is the kickoff to the busy tourism season, and this media exposure will help boost awareness of our area,” said Beth Fischer, executive director of the Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. Annually, more than

Lettuce Abound Farms harvest first aeroponics crop
NEW LONDON — With plates heaped high with at least five varieties of lettuce picked that morning at an aeroponics farm a couple miles away, restaurant owners and volunteers working to bring a food cooperative to New London were clearly enjoying their salads. They were also talking with the farm’s owners about getting the fresh greens on the menu and on the shelves.   “Absolutely,” said Leah Michaelis, owner of Lake Affect Coffee in New London, when asked if she would consider

Highway 23 “gaps” did not receive Corridors of Commerce funding
St. PAUL – The hopes of local officials that the Highway 23 “gap” between New London and Paynesville and other, area transportation projects in the region would be awarded Corridor of Commerce funds were left unmet.   The Minnesota Department of Transportation awarded a total of $417 million to four projects as part of the 2018 Corridors of Commerce program on Tuesday. None of the hoped-for local projects made the cut. MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle announced that funding for 2018

Why so many Twin Cities immigrant organizations are branching out to Greater Minnesota
In 1998, when John Keller joined the St. Paul-based Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota (ILCM) as an immigration attorney, he would often drive to Worthington, where hundreds of low-income immigrants and refugees depended on the organization’s free legal services. “We would do workshops, answer a bunch of questions, do in-takes and represent whoever we could help,” said Keller. Then one day in 2006, a year after he was named ILMC’s executive director, federal immigration agents raided a meatpacking
