The $52 million Willmar Wye project was a partnership project between the U.S. Federal Railroad Administration, Kandiyohi County, Kandiyohi County Economic Development, City of Willmar, Minnesota Department of Transportation and BNSF Railway. The Willmar Connector and Industrial Access Project, also known as the Wye, results in less train traffic in the City of Willmar, reducing train congestion and dangerous train/car interactions. It also is driving economic development opportunities for businesses needing rail.
It was awarded the Regional America’s Transportation Award by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials in 2023.
