Downtown Willmar, Minnesota | May 2023
Block 25 Lofts, built by Ted Schmid of Lumber One, are located in the heart of downtown Willmar within walking distance of the hospital, county offices, ethnic grocery stores, restaurants and shops. The apartment complex was constructed on a Brownfield site, a redevelopment piece of land with various environmental issues. As part of this project, the area was cleared and cleaned of any contamination and transformed into much needed, market rate apartments. As a result it was nominated for the 2023 ReScape Awards by Minnesota Brownfields. KCED worked with the City of Willmar on behalf of Lumber One to achieve a nearly $100 million TIF. KCED, in partnership with the developer, applied for and received a $475,000 contaminated site clean-up grant from the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED).
